All rights reserved ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (this ReadMe document is installed in your program folder) Program installer for De Novo CaseMgr (see "CaseMgr Install.pdf for complete instructions... this is an overview) What am I installing? ----------------------------- De Novo CaseMgr is a powerful, easy to use, highly interactive Law Office Case Management tool. This is the Program Folder installer. There is a separate installer for the required data folder... We suggest you first install the data folder, which is installed on a shared server drive (if available) in networked installations. This program installer supports all 32-bit Windows versions in use today - Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP. System Requirements -------------------------------- Minimal configuration: * Pentium 133 or higher * 64MB RAM * 800x600 screen resolution * Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP * 20 MB available local disk space for Program Folder * 100 MB (shared) disk space for Data Folder (it grows) Preferred configuration: * Pentium 4 or higher * 256MB or more RAM * 1024 x 768 screen resolution * Windows 2000/XP * 20 MB available disk space for Program Folder * 100 MB available (shared) disk space for Data Folder Program folder installer: ---------------------------- CaseMgrSetup.exe places a Program Folder for the De Novo CaseMgr application on your local hard drive. By default the folder is installed in C:\Program Files\De Novo CaseMgr. You can change the destination of the De Novo CaseMgr folder if you wish, but one copy must be installed on a local hard drive for each registered installation of the software. The program folder contains the following files: De Novo CaseMgr.exe (the main program file) ReadMe.txt (the file you are reading) msvcr70.dll (these 4 are resource files) vfp7t.dll vfp7r.dll VFP7RENU.DLL Uninstall.exe - a utility used to uninstall the files installed by the De Novo CaseMgr installer setup.log - a resource file used by Uninstall.exe Cache a folder containing many files; the number varies as areas of the program are used Plugins a folder holding plug-in utilities which add to the capabilities of De Novo CaseMgr PDFDocs a folder holding documentation in Acrobat (r) format Use the separate Data Folder installer to install the required data folder, which is shared in networked installations. It is also necessary to "map a network drive" to associate the data folder, or the drive volume containing it, to a local drive letter (see Windows Help if the concept is unfamiliar). Both a Program Folder (usually named "De Novo CaseMgr") and a Data Folder (usually named "CaseMgrDATA") must be installed to use the software. The data folder contains well over 200 database files, indexes and associated memo files. ***The default login ID and Password are both "super". The installed program serves as a 30-day time-limited version of De Novo CaseMgr until it is licensed. During login, you are offered an opportunity to enter a seven-character license code. If you have registered the software, a code was provided to you. Please keep a copy of this license code in a safe place to use in the event that you must re-install the software. De Novo Systems can, if necessary, provide a replacement license code to registered users. Codes ARE case-sensitive. "A" and "a" are recognized as different characters. Symbols such as "<" and "=" may also be part of a license code. If at any time you wish to license additional workstations, expanding your network to allow more of your colleagues to use De Novo CaseMgr, a new license code can easily be requested from De Novo Systems, Inc. to allow additional installations. Call the De Novo Support Line at 360-695-9372 with any questions about installation or licensing. The support line is normally manned from 9 AM to 4 PM Pacific time, Monday through Friday. SPECIAL VISTA/WIN7 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: Here's some info to help you get De Novo CaseMgr up and running properly on a machine running Vista or Windows 7... First, an overview of the program: There's a shared 'casemgrdata' folder normally on a server drive. It needs read-write access for all users. Locally there's a 'De Novo CaseMgr' program folder, installed by default in the Program Files folder. A sub-folder named 'cache' is constantly being written to, with both temp and permanent files. The local user needs to have read-write access here too. The Vista problem is related to two issues: 1. CaseMgr regularly saves some local files to a folder (cache) inside the De Novo CaseMgr program folder. This is, by default, prohibited by Vista permissions. 2. CaseMgr saves an identifying 'De Novo CaseMgr.txt' file to the root of the local C: drive during the initial link to the CaseMgrDATA folder, and uses it to mark this machine as a licensed installation. This is also prohibited by Vista permissions defaults. Here are the work-arounds... 1. There are two choices for item 1 above. You can install (or move) the De Novo CaseMgr program folder to a different location which is not governed by the tight restrictions of the Windows special folder at C:\Program Files\ For example, you could move the De Novo CaseMgr program folder from C:\Program Files\De Novo CaseMgr to C:\De Novo CaseMgr, or to C:\Users\Public\De Novo CaseMgr. We recommend this option. Another alternative is to have an Administrative User (under Windows) right-click the shortcut on the desktop and choose "Properties" from the Right Mouse menu. Then click the Compatibility tab, and finally, click the "Run this program as an administrator" checkbox (you may first have to click the 'Show settings for all users' button if it appears). This allows the program to run normally even in the Program Files folder. 2. During just the initial setup of CaseMgr on the Vista machine, you MUST run the installation as an Administrator to allow the program to save the 'De Novo CaseMgr.txt' file to the root of the C: drive, so click the 'Run this program as an administrator' checkbox as described above. This can be unchecked after the file is saved if the De Novo CaseMgr is NOT installed in the default Programs Folder location. Note that this procedure is necessary even if you are logged into a Windows Administrative account. Under Vista, even administrative users are not treated as such in this case without checking that critical little checkbox. Contact ----------- De Novo Systems, Inc.
